Alps Tours by Moto-Charlie

AlpineRoads - Biking In The Alps
This site is in English and is full of information about the Alps written by two gentlemen who clearly like riding and who enjoy the Alps. Their site is full of practical riding information and is well laid out and easy to follow. Both riders are English. I've exchanged several pleasant E-mails with Tim, one of the authors. He lives in Austria and has the good fortune to be close at hand to his subject matter. Hence, the real world info in his website.

The Alpine Motorbike Traveler
This site has both an English and German version. The English version is linked here. The site is loaded with all kinds of information pertaining to the Alps. It has a country by country breakdown with key information on a pass by pass basis within each country. There are maps, pictures, and weather info. and a whole lots more. A great Alpine site.

Moto@Alps
This site is similar to the one above except that it is in German. However, the pictures alone are worth the visit plus there is other useful information to be gleaned from just scanning the text. You can click on the regions at the top or, if you know the specific pass that you want, you can click on the "Suchen" button on the top left and then click on the desired pass. Another good site.

Alex's BMW Motorcycle & Global Touring Page
I don't personally know Alex. We've become acquainted through the power of the Internet and have traded e-mails. He has a passion for BMW's and he has toured the Alpine region on numerous occasions. He has taken many of the same pictures I have except that his are much better. I also found "The Alpine Motorbike Traveler" link at his website. His site is clearly a labor of love.

ROADMC-The Extreme Motorcycle Video Web Experience
When I have an attack of Alpinitous here in the states, especially in winter, I go to this website and watch their on board videos as these guys ride up some of my favorite passes. The "Extreme" in the title has nothing to do with kinky sex just great motorcycle action complete with real time sound effects. The Swiss, French and Italian passes are all fun to watch as is the footage from their homeland in Norway. The rest of the site is also helpful. It's a blessing that the print is in English.

Whitehorse Press
According to their website they have more than 1,500 books, videos, maps, etc. on all kinds of things having to do with motorcycling. As mentioned in my FAQ section they also have John Hermann's excellent book "Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps & Corsica, 2nd Ed."

Moto-Directory.com
This site is chock full of motorcycle stuff. The link above gets you to the touring section. If you want tours of Europe scroll down until you hit the "Europe" section near the bottom. Hit the title page button at the top to get to the main page with all the motorcycle info.

Ronnie Cramer's Motorcycle Web Index
Like I said above, just about every kind of thing you might want about motorcycles including touring.

BMWMOA Global Touring - Court Fisher
As the name implies Court Fisher is the keeper of global touring info for the BMWMOA club. The link above directs you to the European section where you will find info. on tour operators, BMW rental sources, and other pertinent touring issues.

Priceline.com
In addition to the well know travel sites such as Travelocity.com and Expedia.com you can use sites like this one and The Daily Auction below to help locate less expensive airfare. This site is familiar to most of you. I know a number of people who have used this site successfully to get pretty good deals on air tickets.

The Daily Auction
Another interesting place to bid for lost cost air travel

Yahoo Weather
I've listed a weather link that will give you some idea of what the weather is like where you're heading.

Some cities to check would be:

  • Germany-Munich
  • Austria-Innsbruck (90 miles south of Munich at the foot of the Alps)
  • France-Val D'isere (high in the French Alps)
  • Italy-Bolzano (a nice valley city with generally warm weather)
  • Italy-Cortina (in the heart of the Dolomites)
  • Switzerland-St. Moritz (sits fairly high, usually cool and indicative of the somewhat cooler temperatures the tour might encounter heading up the passes

The forecast by city initially comes up in degrees C. However, if you look to the right of the word "Today" and click on the "F" the degrees will convert to Fahrenheit.

Oanda.com (Currency Converter)
There are any number of places where you can go on the Internet and find currency conversions. For convenience I've shown one below.

Munich Airport
I base most of my tours out of Steffisburg Switzerland. However, we base out of Munich on rare occasion and for some customized tours. Munich has a modern, clean, easy to get around airport approx. 20 - 25 minutes northeast of the city. English is readily spoken. The Munich Airport website provides most of what you need to know to get around.

Bern - BELP Airport
This is the airport for Bern that serves as our closest destination to Steffisburg. From here it is a pleasant 20 - 25 minute ride by car (or motorcycle) to our hotel in Steffisburg. Unfortunately for us here in the states the website is in German as it should be. If you speak German you're all set. If not you can still get an idea of what the airport is like by clicking on the various website pages. English is readily spoken at the airport itself.
