WHAT ARE THE MOTORCYCLE RENTAL RATES?
The motorcycles available to rent, and the daily rental rates, are shown
at the bottom of this page. Before getting to the bikes and rates below
please keep the following in mind:
-
I will help you make all of the motorcycle arrangements.
-
It is not as complicated as it may look. The time it takes to walk
into the motorcycle shop, deal with the paperwork and leave with your
bike is usually 20 minutes or less.
-
The major rental details are outlined below. I've rented from a
number of shops over the years and researched numerous other rental
sources. The terms below are pretty much standard operating procedure.
-
The exchange rates in effect at the time of rental will effect these
prices up or down a bit. I tend to update the rental rates for the
current exchange rate as we get closer to the tour dates.
-
If you have any specific questions about availability, luggage,
kilometer allowance, the suitability of a particular bike to mountain
riding or anything else please feel free to contact me.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid motorcycle driver's license is required. I highly recommend that
you obtain an international driver's permit ("IDP"). The IDP makes your
license easier for everyone to understand who might need to look at it.
Austria and Italy both require that your license be understood in those
countries and the IDP fits that requirement. TheIDP is available from
your local AAA office, is are good for one year and costs approx. $15
for the IDP and $10 for the attached photo.
DEPOSITS
There are two deposits involved in the motorcycle rental process. #1
is what I call a booking deposit. #2 is an insurance deposit. Both are
discussed below.
#1 - A booking deposit of 500 Swiss Francs (approx. $530) is
required at the time a motorcycle reservation is made.
This reserves the specific bike you want for you.
This deposit is non-refundable. A portion of this deposit may be refunded at the discretion of MC depending on how early the cancellation occurs, any costs incurred by MC and other factors.
#2 - An insurance deposit of 1,000 Swiss Francs (approx. $1,060)
for bikes up to 125 cc or less, or 2,000 Swiss Francs (approx. $2,120)
for bikes of 125cc or bigger is required.
This deposit will be refunded to you in full if there is no damage
to the bike when returned at the end of the tour.
Obviously, if there is damage some, or all, of the deposit may be retained
by the motorcycle shop depending on the extent of the damage.
PAYMENT
#1 - The booking deposit of 500 Swiss francs is made through Moto-Charlie
at the same time you reserve space on the tour. I forward the full 500 CHF to the rental shop when the reservation is secured.
#2 - The insurance deposit deposit must be paid at the time the motorcycle
is picked up. You also pay for the motorcycle rental (less the #1 deposit previously remitted) at the time of pick up. Payment can be made by traveler's checks or major credit
cards (credit cards preferred).
MODELS AND RATES
Shown below are the daily rental rates based on recent exchange rates.
As mentioned above I will update the numbers below for current exchange
rate as the tour dates get closer.
Multiply the daily rate below times the number of tour days in order
to get what the motorcycle cost will be for the tour you chose.
These rates assume a standard km allowance of 200/day - 2,000/tour,
which should be enough. Occasionally, people worry that they will exceed
that allowance. Don't. We have a Bonus-Package option to rent with unlimited kilometers for an additional 30% of
the rental price. This option also includes free side cases and a reduction in the insurance deductible. These choices let you tailor the cost to your
riding style.
The rates below include collision, comprehensive and third party liability
insurance.
Hard cases (when not standard equipment or part of the Bonus-Package) or soft cases, tank bags and
helmets are available to rent for a small additional charge. You are welcome
to bring your own helmet, tank bag, soft luggage or duffel bag for the
bike if you want. I always bring my own helmet and tank bag.
The exact list of current year motorcycles is
usually released by the motorcycle shop in late February or early March.
I will update the info below if there are any major changes when that
release occurs.
Using new bikes helps to ensure reliability and gives you a chance to
try the latest models. As I mention in the "Real Cost" section
the price of the tour may be plus or minus $200, which includes the increased
exchange rates. By tour time the rates may have swung the other way thereby
making the dollar stronger and the rental cost cheaper. If there is a
dramatic swing either way I will revise these rates again
THE RENTAL RATES BELOW ARE "PER DAY" BASED
ON A RENTAL PERIOD OF 7 DAYS OR LONGER
We rent new bikes. The 2012 List to be posted shortly - as soon as available from the rental shop
